Florida – The morning sun is already baking sidewalks across South Florida, and the air feels far warmer than the thermometer suggests. Humidity is building quickly, pushing the heat index into dangerous territory before the afternoon reaches its peak. Anyone spending extended time outdoors will feel the effects long before lunchtime.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, mostly sunny skies will send temperatures to 91 degrees this afternoon, while heat index values climb as high as 105 degrees across the metro. Only a 20 percent chance of a brief shower or thunderstorm develops later tonight, meaning most communities will experience another predominantly hot and dry day.

The combination of intense sunshine and tropical humidity will make outdoor conditions feel oppressive across Miami, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Coral Gables, Kendall, Doral and surrounding communities. Beachgoers, construction crews, landscapers and anyone exercising outside should drink water frequently, wear light clothing and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.

Drivers along Interstate 95, Florida’s Turnpike, State Road 826, U.S. 1 and the Dolphin Expressway should expect vehicles parked in direct sunlight to become dangerously hot within minutes. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, even briefly.

The hot pattern continues Tuesday with another high near 91 degrees and heat index values reaching 105 degrees once again. Wednesday remains mostly sunny with highs around 91 degrees, while Thursday climbs to 92 degrees. Only isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms are expected, leaving most neighborhoods dry while a few locations experience brief downpours and lightning.

Although the nation’s most significant flash flood and severe weather threat remains centered over parts of the Plains, Midwest and portions of the Southeast, South Florida’s primary concern through the week will be persistent heat combined with high humidity. Any isolated thunderstorm that forms could still produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.
