South Florida – Rain chances are expected to peak along the east coast of South Florida today, with scattered to numerous showers and a low chance of isolated thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, rain chances will range from 50% to 60% along the immediate east coast through this evening. Most locations across the east coast metro areas are expected to receive less than 1 inch of rainfall.

Forecasters say there remains some uncertainty due to the placement of an onshore wind shift and a weak frontal boundary. These features will determine where the highest rainfall totals set up during the day.

While the more likely scenario favors lighter rainfall totals, the NWS notes there is a 10% chance of isolated higher rainfall amounts reaching 2 to 3 inches. If that occurs, brief nuisance flooding or ponding of water could develop in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Showers are expected to continue periodically from this morning through about 7 p.m., mainly affecting coastal communities from Palm Beach County south through Miami-Dade County. Interior areas may see fewer showers but are not expected to remain completely dry.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible, though widespread severe weather is not expected. Gusty winds and brief heavy rain may accompany stronger showers.

Residents and commuters are advised to allow extra travel time during periods of heavier rain and remain alert for changing conditions. The National Weather Service recommends monitoring updated forecasts at weather.gov/miami throughout the day.
