Rapid City, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Northern Black Hills in South Dakota and the Wyoming Black Hills from 9 p.m. Tuesday through noon Thursday. Heavy snow and strong winds will create dangerous travel conditions across the region.

The National Weather Service predicts snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches, with localized higher amounts possible in areas like Lead, Deadwood, and Sundance. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will contribute to blowing snow, reducing visibility to under 1/4 mile at times, especially on Wednesday.

Travelers should expect snow-covered roads and limited visibility. Those planning to drive are urged to slow down and monitor conditions via 511 for updates. Prepare emergency kits with blankets, food, and water in case of delays.

The heaviest snow is expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, tapering off by late Thursday. Winds will remain a factor throughout the advisory period, further complicating travel.

By Thursday afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise slightly, with improving conditions through the weekend. However, roads and highways will likely remain icy even after snowfall ends.

Residents in affected areas should avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and monitor updates from local authorities. This prolonged winter storm serves as a reminder to stay prepared and vigilant during extreme weather.
