Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers across Sioux Falls should prepare for deteriorating road conditions beginning Tuesday afternoon as a band of snow moves into eastern South Dakota, bringing accumulating snow and increasing travel hazards into Wednesday. Gusty winds will add to the concern, blowing snow across open roadways and reducing visibility at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the best chances for snow will develop near and north of Interstate 90, where a couple of inches of accumulation are possible from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. Winds are expected to strengthen Wednesday, with gusts approaching 45 mph, which could lead to areas of blowing and drifting snow even after snowfall tapers.

Major routes including I-29, I-90, and Highway 42 are likely to see slick spots develop, particularly during overnight and early morning periods when temperatures remain cold. South Dakota DOT officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility in open areas.

Light snow may linger into Wednesday, keeping roads hazardous at times. Motorists are encouraged to monitor updates as the system approaches, as additional advisories or travel alerts could be issued if snowfall or winds increase.
