Sioux Falls, SD – Residents in Sioux Falls and surrounding areas should brace for wintry conditions this week as snow chances increase and temperatures drop significantly. Fog will diminish Monday morning, but strong winds and possible snow accumulation may impact travel along major routes like I-90 and Highway 14 by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, northwestern Iowa and south-central South Dakota will experience gusty westerly winds reaching up to 45 mph Monday afternoon. Temperatures will hover between 35 and 45 degrees before falling sharply overnight. By Tuesday morning, a band of light snow is expected, bringing between a trace and two inches in localized areas. Areas between I-90 and HWY 14 may see slightly heavier snowfall.
The strongest impacts are forecasted between daybreak and late Tuesday evening. Drivers are advised to plan for reduced visibility and slippery road conditions, particularly during the morning and evening commutes. Cold air will follow the snowfall, with highs in the 20s on Tuesday and overnight lows dropping into the single digits by Thursday.
Wednesday offers brief relief with sunny skies, but temperatures will remain frigid, barely climbing into the teens. Another slight chance for snow emerges late Wednesday into Thursday morning before clearing skies return. Highs by Thursday will rebound slightly into the 30s, with gusty winds making it feel even colder.
Heading into the weekend, temperatures will remain unseasonably low, with highs in the teens and lows dipping toward zero. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates, dress appropriately, and prepare for slick travel conditions throughout the week.
