Bright blue skies and steady south winds pushed warm prairie air into Sioux Falls by late morning, quickly erasing the cool start from earlier in the day. Sidewalks warmed fast, fields dried out, and temperatures surged toward the low 80s before lunchtime.

According to the National Weather Service, Sioux Falls is expected to climb into the upper 80s through Memorial Day and Tuesday as strong late-May warmth settles across eastern South Dakota. South winds could gust between 20 and 25 mph during the afternoon and evening hours.

The dry stretch extends across much of the Interstate 29 corridor, including Brookings, Yankton, Sioux City, and parts of southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Travelers heading toward lakes, campgrounds, or holiday events should encounter mostly favorable weather conditions through midweek.

A few isolated thunderstorms may develop late tonight and again Monday night, though widespread severe weather is not expected at this time. Any storm that forms could produce brief lightning, gusty winds, and small pockets of heavy rain over open rural areas.

Tuesday remains the hottest day of the stretch with highs near 88 degrees under full sunshine. Warm overnight lows near 60 degrees will also keep the air feeling more like midsummer than late spring across the northern Plains.

By Thursday, slightly cooler air and increasing moisture may bring scattered showers and thunderstorms back into southeastern South Dakota. Forecasters continue monitoring broader Plains storm development, especially as humidity slowly increases later in the week.

Long-range outlooks still favor above-normal temperatures heading into early June, keeping early summer vibes firmly in place across the Sioux Falls region.
