Phoenix, AZ – With monsoon season bringing increasing thunderstorm activity across Arizona, weather officials are reminding hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts to take extra precautions before heading into the state’s deserts, mountains and backcountry areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, storms associated with the summer monsoon can develop rapidly and create dangerous conditions even when skies appear relatively clear nearby. One of the biggest threats remains flash flooding in slot canyons, dry washes and low-lying terrain.
Meteorologists warn that floodwaters can surge through washes and canyons from storms occurring miles away, catching hikers and campers off guard with little warning. Officials urge anyone planning outdoor activities to check the latest forecast before departing and to have an alternate plan if weather conditions deteriorate.
The National Weather Service advises outdoor recreationists to immediately seek shelter if thunder is heard or dark storm clouds begin to develop. Campers are also encouraged to avoid setting up campsites in washes or other areas prone to sudden flooding.
In addition to storm hazards, Arizona’s summer weather continues to bring dangerous heat. Officials recommend frequent hydration, wearing sunscreen and lightweight clothing, and monitoring for signs of heat-related illness while hiking or exploring remote areas.
Campfire safety is another concern during the summer season. Visitors should ensure all campfires are completely extinguished before leaving an area, particularly as portions of Arizona remain susceptible to wildfire activity.
Weather officials also stress the importance of carrying a reliable method for receiving weather information, including weather radios, smartphone alerts or forecast apps capable of providing warnings while outdoors.
With monsoon activity expected to increase during the coming weeks, emergency managers are encouraging residents and visitors alike to “Respect the Storm” and remain prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions across Arizona.
