Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Thunderstorms and gusty winds could stir up Friday morning travel across eastern South Dakota, including along I-29 and near the James River Valley. Wind gusts may reach up to 50 mph in some isolated cells, and while severe storms aren’t expected, lightning and brief downpours are possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a round of scattered storms will develop early Friday before clearing out by midday. Storms are most likely west of the James River and may briefly impact travel conditions along major routes like I-29 and Highway 81. Rainfall totals will remain light, generally under a quarter inch, but drivers should watch for slick roads and sudden wind gusts. Friday’s high will only reach 62°F under gradually clearing skies.

The weekend brings welcome relief. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and dry, with highs climbing into the mid-70s by Sunday. Cooler overnight lows in the 30s and 40s will persist through Saturday night, but fire danger will remain low across the region.
