Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers across southeastern South Dakota could face sharply reduced visibility tonight as fog develops this evening and expands northward overnight, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions through early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, fog is expected to form across the Missouri River Valley this evening before steadily pushing north through the night. Visibility may drop quickly in some areas, especially after sunset, with the lowest visibility most likely during the late-night and early-morning hours. The fog is expected to gradually dissipate during the morning hours Sunday as mixing improves.
Communities including Yankton, Mitchell, Chamberlain, and Sioux Falls may see periods of dense fog overnight, with visibility falling to under a mile at times. Areas farther north toward Brookings, Madison, and Watertown could also be impacted as the fog expands. The greatest concern will be on rural highways and low-lying areas where fog tends to thicken and linger.
Motorists traveling overnight or early Sunday are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Sudden drops in visibility are possible, even over short stretches of road.
Conditions should steadily improve after sunrise Sunday, but drivers should remain alert until fog fully lifts. Additional statements may be issued if visibility drops more than expected overnight.
