Pierre, S.D. – Residents across central and southeastern South Dakota should brace for dangerous evening storms, as the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 19 counties, in effect until 12 a.m. CDT Saturday.
According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, the watch—designated No. 469—includes areas from Buffalo and Stanley counties in the west to Hand, Charles Mix, and Tripp counties in the east. The primary threats are damaging winds up to 70 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. Power outages and tree damage are possible, especially in rural areas with limited shelter options.
Communities such as Mitchell, Pierre, Chamberlain, and Winner may experience fast-moving cells capable of knocking down limbs and pelting crops. High-profile vehicles on U.S. Highways 83 and 281 should avoid travel after sunset due to reduced visibility and sudden gusts.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep weather radios or phone alerts active. Mobile homes and poorly anchored structures are especially vulnerable during high winds.
Storms may continue developing through midnight, with additional watches or warnings possible if conditions intensify.
