Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa this afternoon, bringing the potential for isolated tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds up to 70 mph.

According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls office, storms are forecast to initiate near Interstate 29 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. CDT. As the system strengthens, storms are likely to turn severe quickly, spreading east-northeast across the tri-state region through the evening commute (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.). The main line of storms is projected to move east of Highway 71 before sunset, but isolated strong cells may persist farther west into the early evening hours.

Cities at highest risk include Sioux Falls, Brookings, Worthington, and Spencer, where a Level 4 out of 5 threat assessment is in effect. Numerous watches and warnings are expected throughout the afternoon, with hazards including gusty winds, isolated tornadoes, and localized flooding possible. Drivers along major roadways like I-29 and U.S. Highway 71 should prepare for rapid changes in conditions.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, stay indoors during warnings, and seek shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued. The threat is expected to gradually diminish after 7 p.m., but additional alerts could continue if lingering storms redevelop.
