Chicago, Illinois – Strong winds and overnight storms could cause damage across Illinois starting Monday afternoon, as gusts up to 45 mph and the threat of isolated severe thunderstorms roll across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the greatest risks will develop between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. CDT, with storms capable of producing damaging winds strong enough to down tree limbs and damaging hail that could dent cars and siding. A Severe Weather Threat Level 2 has been issued for the area, meaning widely scattered strong storms are expected.

Across northern Illinois, Monday afternoon’s winds may make driving hazardous, especially on open highways and exposed roadways. Residents are urged to secure lightweight outdoor furniture and decorations ahead of the gustiest period. Temperatures will remain unusually warm, climbing to between 76 and 83 degrees during the day before storms develop overnight.

Specific areas south of I-80, including Joliet and Kankakee, have a higher chance of storm activity tonight and again midweek. Southwest suburbs near Aurora and Naperville could see the highest rainfall totals and stronger cells early Tuesday morning.

Travelers should plan for slowed driving conditions, localized flooding in downpours, and possible power outages. Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight and minimizing outdoor activities after dark.

Storm chances return Wednesday and Thursday, with a cooldown expected by Friday. Alerts and warnings remain in effect into Tuesday morning.
