Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers across South Dakota face hazardous conditions through Wednesday evening as blowing snow and wind gusts topping 55 mph threaten to reduce visibility to near zero along major roadways, including I-90 and I-29.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, light snow will continue Tuesday evening with accumulations up to 2 inches, followed by additional snow—up to 1 inch—Wednesday morning, primarily north of I-90. The most dangerous conditions are expected from late morning into the afternoon Wednesday when strong northwest winds arrive.
Whiteout conditions are possible, especially across eastern counties like Brookings, Watertown, and Madison. Blowing and drifting snow, paired with wind gusts between 40 and 55+ mph, will create difficult travel along open stretches of highway. A Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory remain in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
High-profile vehicles should use extreme caution, particularly on exposed roads and overpasses. Visibility may rapidly drop in gusts, and scattered slick spots could develop across southeastern South Dakota during the morning commute.
Winds will begin tapering off by Wednesday evening, but residents should stay alert for new advisories ahead of dangerously cold wind chills arriving Friday night.
