Sioux Falls, SD – Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected across eastern South Dakota tonight as a storm system moves in from the west. The National Weather Service warns residents, particularly those near I-29, of potential travel disruptions as rain spreads across the region late tonight into Wednesday morning. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are anticipated, creating challenging driving conditions. Rainfall could exceed half an inch east of I-29, with risks of minor flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service, the rain is likely to begin after midnight and intensify before dawn on Wednesday. Temperatures overnight will drop to a low near 42°F, while strong southeast winds up to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, could cause visibility issues on roads. Rainfall is expected to continue through Wednesday afternoon, gradually diminishing by the evening, with estimated totals between a quarter and half an inch.
As the weather system exits, conditions will improve later in the week. Thursday will be mostly sunny with a high near 52°F, while Friday and Saturday promise clear skies and warming temperatures, reaching highs near 59°F by the weekend. Light winds and calm nights should follow, offering a reprieve from the current storm.
Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and adjust travel plans as needed. The combination of rain and strong gusts could impact visibility, especially on highways and open roads. Those in flood-prone areas should monitor local alerts and take precautions if necessary.
