Sioux Falls, SD – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, as a fast-moving winter system threatens to bring blizzard-like conditions, powerful winds, and icy roads, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

Forecasters warn that while snow totals may remain light—generally around one inch—wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph could create whiteout conditions across open areas, especially along Interstate 29 and surrounding rural highways. In some locations, a light glaze of ice is also possible, increasing the risk of slick roads and falling tree branches.

According to meteorologist Meyers with the NWS, visibility could drop below one-quarter mile at times, making travel dangerous or even life-threatening Tuesday night into early Wednesday. The Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes may be heavily impacted by blowing snow and icy surfaces.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions develop.
