Sioux Falls, S.D. – Near-critical fire conditions will grip parts of South Dakota through Tuesday evening as warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity combine to raise wildfire risks, especially along and south of Highway 14.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the greatest threat spans central, east central, and southeast South Dakota, where highs in the 70s and wind gusts up to 20 mph could ignite dry grass and brush. The fire danger extends into parts of northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and northeast Nebraska.

In cities like Brookings, Mitchell, and Huron, residents should avoid outdoor burning and use caution with equipment that may produce sparks. Winds from the west and northwest will continue into the evening, with humidity levels dropping as low as 25%.

Drivers are urged to avoid pulling off roads into grassy areas and to report any signs of smoke or fire to local authorities. While showers may return by midweek, today poses the highest threat.

No additional weather hazards are expected for the rest of the week, but fire danger remains elevated until winds die down later tonight.
