Austin, TX – South Central Texas is set to experience a significant heat wave over the next several days, with temperatures reaching into the upper 90s and low 100s. The National Weather Service (NWS) Austin-San Antonio has issued a forecast predicting highs up to 105°F along the Rio Grande over the upcoming weekend.
According to the NWS, the heat will intensify starting today, with most areas seeing temperatures in the mid-90s. By Wednesday, highs are expected to climb further, reaching 95°F. The trend continues with Thursday and Friday both forecasted to hit 96°F, followed by a peak of 97°F on Saturday. The extreme heat will slightly ease on Sunday with a forecasted high of 94°F.
Nighttime temperatures will offer little relief, with lows only dropping to the mid-70s, making for warm and uncomfortable nights. Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
This prolonged period of high temperatures poses a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children. The NWS also warns that areas along the Rio Grande could experience the highest temperatures, potentially reaching 105°F.
