Phoenix, AZ – South-Central Arizona is preparing for fast-moving thunderstorms and scattered showers expected to hit from Sunday morning into Monday afternoon. The Phoenix metro area could receive between 0.2 and 0.5 inches of rain. Areas further east, including Globe and Payson, could see slightly higher totals.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix, these storms could lead to potential flash flooding, especially in burn scar areas. NWS warns that heavy rainfall over burn scars could result in rapid water flow, increasing the likelihood of flooding.
Strong thunderstorms could also bring localized heavy rains, lightning, and ponding on roads, making travel hazardous. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as conditions could change rapidly.
The storms are expected to increase in intensity in the afternoon, with stronger cells developing. Emergency services are urging residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for potential flash flooding.
The forecast highlights the importance of remaining vigilant, especially in areas already impacted by wildfires.
