Columbia, SC – A flood advisory remains in effect for the Congaree River, with residents urged to avoid low-lying areas through Saturday afternoon. Rising temperatures this weekend will bring above-normal highs to South Carolina, but the National Weather Service warns of continued flooding risks for Richland and Lexington counties.
According to the National Weather Service, the Congaree River reached 9.6 feet early Friday morning, with levels expected to exceed the action stage of 10.8 feet by late morning. Flood-prone roads near Columbia, including areas around the Cayce and West Columbia riverwalks, may become impassable. Drivers should heed posted warnings and avoid flooded roadways to ensure safety.
Temperatures will climb steadily over the weekend. Saturday brings sunny skies and a high near 58 degrees, while Sunday will be partly cloudy with highs reaching 67 degrees. Next week, South Carolina will see temperatures surge into the low 70s by Tuesday, accompanied by rain chances by midweek.
Flood warnings remain in effect near Carolina Eastman, where minor flooding continues and extensive flooding is forecast in agricultural areas near the Congaree National Park. Residents should remain vigilant and monitor updates from local authorities for changes in water levels.
This weekend offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities in higher elevations but comes with a reminder to exercise caution near rivers and low-lying roads.
