South Carolina – Heat is building across the Midlands, and temperatures are surging into the mid-90s today before a quick shift brings cooler air and scattered showers by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, Columbia will reach near 94°F with sunny skies and light winds turning southwest in the afternoon. By Sunday, a 30% chance of showers develops, with north winds increasing and gusts reaching up to 23 mph as cooler air moves in.

Across Columbia, Lexington, and Cayce, dry conditions dominate through the day. Roads remain clear, but the heat will feel intense during peak afternoon hours. Stay hydrated and limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day.

By Sunday afternoon, clouds begin to build and scattered showers develop. Rain coverage remains limited, but brief wet pavement could impact travel along I-20, I-26, and I-77. Winds will shift out of the north, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures compared to today.

The most significant change arrives Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures fall into the upper 40s, creating a much cooler start. While no freeze is expected, the air will feel crisp after the recent heat.

Monday stays sunny with highs near 77°F, followed by another cool night. By Tuesday, temperatures remain steady in the upper 70s with clear skies.

A stronger warming trend returns by midweek, with highs climbing back into the upper 80s and near 90°F by late week, signaling a return to early summer conditions across central South Carolina.
