Anderson, S.C. – Severe thunderstorms could sweep through parts of Upstate South Carolina this evening, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts, hail, and intense lightning through 9 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 386) was issued at 3 p.m. EDT for Abbeville, Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties. The watch remains in effect until 9 p.m., as conditions remain favorable for storms capable of producing 60+ mph winds and isolated large hail.

Residents in Anderson and Clemson should stay weather-aware, especially during late afternoon and early evening hours. Outdoor events, including local high school graduations and youth sports, may face delays or cancellations. Travel on I-85 and US-76 could be hazardous as storms develop rapidly with heavy rain reducing visibility.

Emergency management teams recommend staying indoors when thunder roars and securing loose outdoor items like patio furniture and trash bins. Power outages are possible if trees or branches are brought down by strong wind gusts.

The severe weather threat is expected to taper off by late evening, but another round of showers could follow on Sunday. Stay tuned to local alerts, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
