Asheville, N.C. – Severe thunderstorms could lash western North Carolina through 9 p.m. Saturday, with damaging wind gusts, hail, and lightning threatening mountain communities from Cherokee to Transylvania counties.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 386 was issued at 3 p.m. EDT and covers eight counties, including Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain. The watch means conditions are favorable for storms capable of producing 60 mph winds and quarter-size hail.

Residents across the Smokies and surrounding foothills should prepare for sudden downpours and dangerous lightning, especially along U.S. Route 74, U.S. 441, and mountain passes prone to wind damage. Power outages and fallen trees are possible, particularly in areas with saturated ground from recent rain.

Emergency officials advise securing outdoor items, staying indoors during thunder, and avoiding travel until storms pass. Campers and hikers in Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests are urged to seek shelter immediately.

Though storms are expected to weaken after sunset, more showers could follow overnight. Stay tuned to local alerts, and be prepared for additional watches or warnings as this unstable pattern continues into Sunday.
