Spartanburg, S.C. – Clear skies and summer heat will bring more than sunshine to the Upstate on Tuesday—air quality could pose serious health risks.

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services has issued a Code Orange Ground Level Ozone Action Day for Monday, June 2, affecting Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and surrounding counties. The alert runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and warns that ozone levels may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially during the afternoon heat.

According to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, warm temperatures and calm winds will trap pollutants near the surface, elevating ozone levels. Vulnerable groups—including children, seniors, and people with lung conditions—should avoid extended outdoor activity, especially around high-traffic areas like I-85 and during the peak heat window between noon and 6 p.m.

Residents can help limit ozone formation by carpooling, biking, or delaying vehicle trips. Keeping your car parked during midday hours and conserving electricity can also reduce pollution.

On Tuesday, expect mostly sunny skies and a high near 86°F in Spartanburg and Greenville, with light winds providing little relief. Clear and warm conditions will persist into Wednesday and Thursday, keeping ozone a recurring concern.
