Charleston, SC – Residents across Charleston and the Lowcountry are being advised to prepare for potentially severe weather as isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop today, with the highest threat occurring between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
According to the US National Weather Service Charleston SC, the greatest chances for thunderstorms are expected during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Forecasters warn that strong, damaging wind gusts—potentially exceeding 60 mph—will be the main hazard. Locally heavy rainfall is also a concern, with the slow movement of storms possibly resulting in isolated pockets of 2 to 3 inches of rain.
The Weather Service urges residents to secure outdoor items, remain indoors during severe weather, and be cautious around downed trees and power lines. Motorists are reminded never to drive through flooded roadways, as rapidly rising water can pose a life-threatening risk.
Communities across the region—including Summerville, Walterboro, Moncks Corner, and areas around Charleston—should monitor weather updates closely throughout the afternoon and evening. Additional updates will be provided as conditions develop.
