Columbia, SC – Freezing temperatures are keeping icy road conditions dangerous across central South Carolina this morning. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. as lingering snow and black ice make travel hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time for their morning commutes.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will hover in the 20s through midday before gradually rising to a high of 35 degrees this afternoon. Clear skies are expected to help improve conditions, but any melted ice will likely refreeze overnight as temperatures plunge to 14 degrees.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring mostly cloudy skies with a high near 41 and light winds, providing some relief from the freezing temperatures. By Friday, sunny skies and highs near 44 will continue the warming trend. However, low temperatures will persist, with overnight lows falling into the teens and 20s through Saturday.
Residents are advised to use extreme caution on icy surfaces, including sidewalks and driveways. The NWS recommends wearing proper footwear to prevent falls and injuries. Those traveling through affected areas, especially on Interstate 26 and local Columbia roads, should monitor updated forecasts and road conditions.
Stay prepared as another cold front brings temperatures in the 40s for the weekend. While daytime highs will rise, clear nights will keep frost and black ice a concern into next week.
