Greenville, SC – Fires could spread rapidly across the Upstate through 8 p.m. tonight as dry air and gusty winds combine to create elevated fire danger, especially along the I-85 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, low relative humidity and breezy conditions are drying out vegetation across northeast Georgia, Upstate South Carolina, and parts of western North Carolina. These conditions make it easier for outdoor fires to ignite and spread quickly, even from small sparks.
Communities including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Clemson sit in the highest risk zone, where any outdoor burning could become difficult to control. Fire officials warn that flames may spread faster than expected due to the combination of dry fuels and wind.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning through this evening. If burning is necessary, use extreme caution and follow all local restrictions. Keep water or fire suppression tools nearby and never leave a fire unattended.
Conditions are expected to improve after sunset as humidity levels recover and winds ease. Until then, fire danger remains elevated and additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
