Charleston, SC – Coastal South Carolina beaches face a high risk of dangerous rip currents today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston office. The warning includes popular spots like Hilton Head, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island.
The NWS Charleston emphasized that life-threatening rip currents are expected in the surf zone across a wide stretch of the coastline. Rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, making them difficult to escape even for experienced swimmers.
According to the NWS, the highest risk areas include Cape Romain Beaches down to Blackbeard Island. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water, especially in unguarded areas. Swimming is strongly discouraged during these conditions.
Local authorities are urging caution, and lifeguards have been briefed on the heightened risks. Residents and tourists alike are encouraged to follow safety advice, stay updated on weather conditions, and avoid swimming until the threat subsides.
