South Bend, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana will trade winter coats for rain gear as temperatures surge into the 70s by Friday afternoon, bringing rounds of showers that could slow travel along Interstate 80 and U.S. 31 through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, unseasonably mild air will push highs into the 50s today and Thursday before climbing into the upper 60s and low to mid-70s Friday. Along with the warmth, a persistent wet pattern will bring periods of showers and scattered thunderstorms.
Areas of fog early each morning may reduce visibility, particularly near low-lying stretches of I-90 from South Bend to Elkhart and along U.S. 30 near Warsaw. Showers will redevelop tonight and continue at times Thursday, with additional thunderstorm chances Friday afternoon and evening as warmer air peaks across the region.
The Friday evening commute could be impacted along I-69 near Fort Wayne and I-80/90 across the Indiana Toll Road, where heavier downpours may cause ponding water and sudden slowdowns. While widespread severe weather is not expected at this time, brief gusty winds and lightning are possible in stronger cells.
Residents should monitor changing conditions and allow extra stopping distance on wet roads. Temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages into Saturday, with more showers possible before cooler air gradually returns late in the weekend.
