South Bend, IN – A woman was critically injured Sunday afternoon in South Bend after being struck by a pickup truck while walking on the sidewalk.
According to the South Bend Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 1:18 p.m. at the intersection of Mishawaka Avenue and Longfellow Avenue. Officers found that the pedestrian, a 17-year-old female, had suffered severe injuries after being hit by a Toyota Tacoma, driven by 38-year-old Gregory Michael Durling of South Bend.
The truck continued to drive off the roadway, hitting the female before crashing into the exterior wall of a building at the corner of the intersection. She was immediately taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Initial investigations suggest that Durling showed signs of impairment at the scene. He was taken into custody and is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail, pending charges.
The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing.
