South Bend, IN – A fatal crash occurred early Saturday morning in South Bend after a police officer observed a vehicle making an abrupt turn and later losing control.
According to the South Bend Police Department, the incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. on May 10, when a police officer was patrolling the city’s northwest side. The officer witnessed a vehicle turn abruptly onto Huey Street from Elwood Avenue.
The vehicle continued onto Humboldt Street and then turned into an alley between Huey and Elmer Streets. While in the alley, the officer saw the driver’s side door open as the vehicle was still in motion. Moments later, the vehicle veered off course, crashing into a tree, which caused it to roll onto its side.
The officer reported that he did not attempt to initiate a traffic stop or activate his lights or sirens prior to the crash. After the crash, emergency responders located the driver pinned beneath the vehicle and immediately called for medical assistance. The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the male driver is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The crash remains under investigation.
