South Bend, IN – Snow and strong winds today are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across northern Indiana, especially during the morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. ET for nearby Michigan counties, with impacts extending into the South Bend area. Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of snow today, with less than 1 inch possible elsewhere, but conditions may worsen due to wind.
Periods of low visibility caused by falling and blowing snow are expected, particularly this morning. Southwest winds gusting between 25 and 30 mph could lead to blowing and drifting snow, resulting in sudden visibility drops even outside of advisory areas.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and open roadways. Drivers on Interstate 80/90, U.S. 31, and State Road 23 should be prepared for slick pavement and brief whiteout conditions.
Lake-enhanced snow is expected to develop tonight, mainly impacting areas west and north of U.S. 6, with additional 1 to 2 inches possible in southwest Michigan. Elsewhere, snow chances decrease but colder air moves in.
The National Weather Service also warned of bitterly cold conditions developing tonight and continuing into the weekend, with wind chills dropping to 15 to 20 degrees below zero at times, especially late Friday night into Saturday morning.
Commuters, students, and delivery drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions change throughout the day.
