South Bend, Indiana – Indiana residents are in for a sweltering stretch as a wave of dangerous heat and humidity moves in, pushing heat indices to 105° across much of the region through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from 2–8 PM EDT Wednesday for areas west of US 31. During this period, peak heat indices are expected to reach around 100°, with even hotter conditions area-wide Thursday when indices may spike between 100° and 105°. Wednesday’s highs will reach 87–94° with overnight lows hovering near 70°.

South Bend, Elkhart, and Mishawaka should prepare for uncomfortable and potentially hazardous heat. Outdoor workers, students in summer programs, and anyone traveling along US 31 or I-94 should limit activity during peak heat hours and stay hydrated. Local emergency officials advise checking on vulnerable neighbors, never leaving children or pets in vehicles, and using cooling centers if necessary.

Showers and thunderstorms may finally break the heat late Thursday into Friday, but until then, utility companies are urging residents to conserve energy to avoid outages. This marks the first major heat event of July for Northern Indiana, reminiscent of last summer’s extended stretch.

High temperatures and heat indices will remain elevated through Friday, with a slight cooldown expected over the weekend. Further advisories may be issued if the heat persists.
