Pueblo, CO – A powerful winter storm is set to impact southern Colorado, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Friday for the Eastern San Juan Mountains and Upper Rio Grande Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the storm could bring between 2 and 16 inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulations expected in higher elevations, including Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, creating hazardous whiteout conditions and making travel difficult or even impossible in some areas.
Blowing snow is expected to significantly reduce visibility, particularly during the Thursday morning and evening commutes. The storm may also cause tree damage due to strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow. Drivers are urged to avoid travel if possible, and those who must be on the road should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
For updated road conditions, travelers are advised to call 511 or check Colorado Department of Transportation resources. The storm is expected to taper off early Friday morning, but lingering snow and strong winds may continue to impact the region into the weekend.
