Sacramento, CA – A significant snowstorm is set to impact the Sierra Nevada region today, bringing hazardous travel conditions and heavy snowfall. Weather forecasters predict accumulation of up to 12 inches in higher elevations, with snowfall rates potentially reaching 2 inches per hour by the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Snow levels, currently above 6,500 feet, are expected to drop to 5,000 feet as temperatures fall throughout the day. Winds gusting up to 60 mph in exposed areas could create additional hazards, particularly for travelers along Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential delays or road closures. If travel is essential, the California Department of Transportation recommends carrying chains and checking road conditions online at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or by dialing 511.
The storm is expected to clear late tonight, but lingering snow and freezing temperatures may continue to impact roads into Monday. As New Year’s Eve approaches, travelers heading into the Sierra Nevada are advised to monitor weather updates and plan for extended travel times.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast predicts calmer weather by midweek, with sunny skies and milder temperatures returning just in time for New Year’s Day.
