Raleigh, NC – A significant winter storm is expected to bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain to much of North Carolina from Wednesday morning through Thursday, potentially causing power outages and hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, central and eastern parts of the state, including the Sandhills and Coastal Plain, could see up to a quarter-inch of ice, with isolated areas accumulating as much as a third of an inch. Snow and sleet totals could reach 1 to 2 inches in these regions.
Further north, including areas near the Virginia border, snowfall accumulations could range from 1 to 6 inches. The heaviest snow is expected in the Northern Piedmont, while the US 64 corridor may see up to two-tenths of an inch of ice.
The winter storm could severely impact Wednesday morning and evening commutes, with conditions remaining hazardous into Thursday morning. Authorities urge residents to avoid travel if possible and to prepare for potential power outages.
The precipitation is expected to begin as snow and sleet before transitioning to freezing rain by Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service advises monitoring forecasts for updates and taking necessary precautions.
