KANKAKEE, Ill. — A developing winter storm is expected to bring several inches of snow to parts of central and eastern Illinois late Friday night through Saturday night, with the heaviest snow likely north of Interstate 57, forecasters said. The National Weather Service in Chicago said areas including Kankakee, Pontiac, Rensselaer and Paxton could see moderate snowfall early Saturday, though some areas may transition to light rain or drizzle Saturday night as temperatures hover near freezing.

Snow is expected to begin overnight Friday into early Saturday morning, with periods of heavier snow possible through the day. While northwestern portions of the Chicago area may exceed six inches, communities farther south are expected to see lower totals — generally 2 to 5 inches — before a potential changeover to rain reduces additional accumulation.

The Weather Service cautions that even with lesser totals, travel could still be hazardous, particularly during the morning and midday hours Saturday when snowfall rates could briefly reach an inch per hour. Roads, bridges and overpasses may become slick and snow-covered, and reduced visibility could make driving difficult in open or rural areas.

Forecasters note that small temperature differences could make a big impact on snow amounts. If colder air holds longer into Saturday evening, heavier snow could extend farther south than currently projected. Conversely, a faster northward shift of warmer air could bring a quicker change to rain and limit snow totals.

Residents across Kankakee County and northwestern Indiana are urged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions throughout Saturday. The Weather Service advises avoiding unnecessary travel and checking weather.gov/chicago for updates on any winter weather advisories or warnings that may be issued.
