La Crosse, WI – Residents across western Wisconsin should brace for winter weather today as snow showers, strong winds, and plummeting temperatures move into the area. Gusts could reach 50 mph, creating hazardous driving conditions and risks for unsecured outdoor items.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow showers are expected to begin early this morning, with visibility rapidly decreasing during heavier bursts. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. through midnight, covering portions of central and western Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota, and northeastern Iowa.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid high-profile vehicles during the strongest gusts and secure lightweight objects, including holiday decorations. Blustery northwest winds combined with dropping temperatures will push wind chills to as low as -15°F by early Thursday morning.
By Thursday, the region will see sunny skies, but temperatures will remain frigid, with a high of only 21°F. Wind chills will continue to hover near -5°F throughout the day, making proper outdoor preparation critical.
The extended forecast predicts calmer conditions heading into the weekend. Friday will bring partly cloudy skies and highs near 28°F. Saturday is expected to warm slightly, with a high of 40°F and mostly sunny skies. By Sunday, highs could climb to 47°F, though rain chances may return early next week.
Residents should take precautions today by limiting time outdoors, wearing warm layers, and monitoring updates from local authorities. Those traveling should drive cautiously and be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility on major routes, including I-90.
