Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful arctic front is sweeping across South Dakota, bringing plummeting temperatures and dangerous wind gusts today. The National Weather Service warns of wind chills as low as -15 degrees by Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, northwest wind gusts of 40-50 mph are expected throughout the day, making travel along I-90 hazardous. Light, patchy freezing drizzle and snow showers could also reduce visibility, though significant accumulation is unlikely. Drivers are urged to secure loose items, slow down, and plan for shifting road conditions.
Wednesday’s high temperatures will drop dramatically by late afternoon, with the thermometer falling into single digits by evening. Wind chills will intensify overnight, creating dangerous outdoor conditions. Residents should limit exposure and dress in layers to protect against frostbite.
A brief warm-up is forecast for the weekend, with highs climbing into the 40s and 50s on Saturday and Sunday. However, colder air could return early next week, making today and tomorrow critical for preparing for ongoing winter conditions.
Motorists are advised to check updated forecasts and road conditions before traveling. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, flashlights, and water, in case of delays or accidents.
