Wilmington, IL – A six-hour firefighting operation Sunday successfully contained a large outbuilding fire on Stripmine Road.
Crews were dispatched at 3 p.m. to 22838 Stripmine Rd., where heavy smoke was seen pouring from several large buildings. A Full Still mutual aid request was made while en route. Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze spreading rapidly due to high winds.
According to Deputy Chief Todd Friddle, the fire escalated to a Second Alarm, bringing in additional resources from the tri-county area. Limited access to the property via a single-lane road posed challenges, but crews managed to prevent the flames from reaching two additional structures.
No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians. Wilmington Police and ESDA provided support, closing Stripmine Road to assist with water supply operations. Fire crews contained the fire after six hours of intense effort.
The MABAS Division 15 Cause and Origin Team is investigating the cause of the fire. Nearby fire departments handled other emergencies during the operation.
Residents are urged to ensure properties have accessible routes for emergency responders. Contact Deputy Chief Friddle at (815) 476-6675 for more information.
