SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Residents across South Dakota face a stormy stretch as a humid air mass fuels repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms through midweek. Dangerous storms are most likely late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with a few reaching severe levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the heaviest rain and strongest storms will develop west of Interstate 29 before spreading east overnight. Storms may bring damaging winds, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. Rainfall totals could be enough to cause ponding on roads and slow morning commutes Wednesday.

Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton are among cities most likely to see heavy rain Wednesday, where storm chances climb to 80%. Farther west, Mitchell and Huron could experience repeated rounds of rainfall into Thursday. The wet pattern lingers through Friday, with rain chances gradually tapering into the weekend.

Officials advise drivers to slow down during downpours, avoid flooded intersections, and keep devices charged in case of brief power outages.

Storm chances remain in the forecast through Thursday, with drier conditions expected to return by Saturday.
