Sioux Falls, SD – Residents are facing bitterly cold temperatures today as wind chills plunge to dangerous levels, but relief is in sight by the weekend. With temperatures hovering near 5°F and wind chills dipping to -20°F, exposed skin can freeze within minutes, making outdoor activities hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday will be the coldest day of the week, with highs barely reaching 19°F. Northerly winds at 10 mph are expected to push wind chills close to zero. Residents are advised to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
Looking ahead, a major thaw begins Friday as temperatures climb to the mid-30s under sunny skies. By Saturday and Sunday, warmer southerly winds will drive highs into the upper 40s, a nearly 30-degree jump from Thursday’s frigid weather. No major storms are forecast, but slight rain or snow chances return Monday.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously, as icy conditions from Thursday’s cold may persist into Friday morning, particularly along Interstate 29. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, and ensure cell phones are charged before traveling.
The weather rollercoaster continues into next week, with highs dropping back into the 30s by Tuesday. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
