Hanford, CA – Travel through Yosemite’s high country could quickly become dangerous by daybreak Tuesday as heavy snow and powerful winds move into the Sierra Nevada.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday. There is a 75 percent chance of at least 6 inches of snow across higher elevations, along with a 60 percent chance of wind gusts exceeding 55 mph.
The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will create whiteout conditions at times, especially in exposed areas like Tuolumne Meadows, Devils Postpile, and along the Upper San Joaquin River. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become snow-covered and slick, making travel difficult or nearly impossible during peak conditions.
Falling tree branches are also possible due to the weight of snow combined with strong wind gusts, posing additional hazards for travelers and those in remote areas.
Anyone planning to travel through the region should delay trips if possible, carry winter emergency supplies, and check Caltrans road conditions via 511 before heading out.
Conditions will remain hazardous through early Wednesday, with gradual improvement expected after winds weaken. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall or wind impacts increase.
