A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet, stretching from Yosemite south to the Lake Isabella region. According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, an additional 4 to 6 feet of snow is expected through Friday, with snowfall rates capable of reaching a foot per day at higher elevations. Blowing snow and reduced visibility are creating dangerous conditions.
Mountain travel is strongly discouraged. Highways such as State Route 120, State Route 168, and mountain access roads near Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks are prone to chain controls, delays, and closures. Snow loads continue to increase on trees and structures, raising concerns for falling limbs and power disruptions.
Snow levels remain high now but are expected to lower toward 5,000 feet by the weekend, expanding impacts into foothill communities. Winds continue to gust, causing drifting snow and whiteout conditions at times, especially near exposed ridgelines and passes.
For residents and travelers returning home after Christmas, timing is critical. Conditions remain hazardous through Friday, and road crews may struggle to keep up with snowfall rates. Even brief breaks in snowfall can be misleading, as conditions deteriorate quickly once heavier bands return.
