Shreveport, Louisiana – A major winter weather event is expected to bring dangerous ice accumulations across northwest Louisiana through Sunday, raising the risk of hazardous travel and power disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, widespread freezing rain and ice accumulations of 0.25 to 0.75 inches are expected across much of the region, including the Shreveport metro area. Forecasters warn that ice amounts may approach or exceed one-half inch, which is sufficient to down tree limbs and power lines.

The highest ice accumulations are expected along and south of Interstate 20, where prolonged periods of freezing rain are forecast. While some northern areas could see higher snow and sleet totals, ice will remain the primary threat for Shreveport and surrounding communities.

Combined sleet and snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible in parts of the region, but these amounts will fall on top of ice-covered surfaces, worsening road conditions. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become dangerous or impassable, especially overnight.

Residents are urged to avoid travel during periods of icing, prepare for possible power outages, and complete storm preparations as soon as possible. Conditions are expected to slowly improve late Sunday as temperatures rise.
