Grundy County, IL – Local residents are being warned about a phone scam involving false jury duty warrants. Fraudsters are calling people, claiming they missed jury duty and now face a contempt of court warrant.
According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the scammers are using a spoofed phone number that appears to belong to the Sheriff’s Department. The caller informs the person that they owe a fine, often $10,000, for missing jury duty.
Once the victim is convinced, the scammer directs them to a bank or other location to wire money. The Sheriff’s Office has made it clear this is a scam. Neither the Circuit Court nor the Sheriff’s Office issues warrants for missed jury duty or demands payment over the phone.
Officials urge anyone receiving these calls to hang up immediately and report the incident. The Sheriff’s Office reassured residents, stating, “We are NOT coming for you!” Residents should remain cautious and avoid falling prey to these tactics.
