Shelbyville, IN – The Shelby County Traffic Safety Partnership, comprising the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Shelbyville Police Department, is intensifying patrols focused on school bus stop arm violations. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of students as the new school year begins.
Major Chris Holder announced on Monday that officers will be closely monitoring school buses and patrolling school bus zones throughout the county. The effort is part of an ongoing campaign to reduce traffic violations and enhance the safety of children traveling to and from school. Violating the stop arm law, which requires drivers to stop when a school bus is loading or unloading students, is a serious offense that can result in fines and license suspension.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the increased enforcement will include following school buses during their routes to catch violators in the act. This proactive approach underscores the county’s commitment to student safety, with officers prepared to issue citations to any driver failing to comply with the law.
The department urges all motorists to remain vigilant, especially during school hours, to avoid costly penalties and, more importantly, to protect the lives of students across Shelby County.
