Binghamton, NY – A powerful winter storm continues to bring heavy snow and gusty winds to Central New York, with totals expected to reach up to 12 inches by early Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Northern and Southern Oneida, Onondaga, Cortland, Madison, Chenango, and Otsego counties until 4 a.m. Friday. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches are forecast, with the highest amounts in areas affected by lake-effect snow. Winds gusting up to 45 mph are expected to create widespread blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.
Officials warn that travel conditions could become treacherous, particularly during the morning and evening commutes. Embedded snow squalls may reduce visibility to near zero at times. Gusty winds also pose a risk of downed tree branches and power outages.
Residents are urged to stay off the roads if possible and to prepare for emergency situations by keeping a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles.
For the latest road conditions, travelers can dial 511.
