St. Louis, MO – A tornado watch remains in effect for more than 40 counties across Missouri and Illinois until 11 p.m. CDT Friday, as severe storms threaten the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned residents of possible tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

According to the NWS, the watch includes key metropolitan areas such as St. Louis, Springfield, and Jefferson City, as well as numerous rural counties. In Illinois, the affected counties include Madison, St. Clair, and Macoupin, while Missouri counties under the watch include Boone, Callaway, Franklin, and Phelps. The storms could bring wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail up to the size of golf balls.

Residents are urged to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, such as NOAA weather radios and mobile alerts. If a tornado warning is issued, individuals should seek shelter in a basement or an interior room away from windows.

The severe weather threat is expected to diminish after 11 p.m., though lingering storms could still produce strong winds and heavy rain overnight. Travelers should exercise caution and monitor updates from local officials and meteorologists.
