Chicago, IL – Severe thunderstorms are forecast to hit Illinois tonight, with the most significant threat occurring between 7 p.m. and midnight. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for the potential of damaging hail, strong winds, and heavy rain, impacting areas across the state.
According to the National Weather Service, scattered severe thunderstorms will begin developing this afternoon, with the main threat expected later in the evening. These storms may bring lightning, heavy downpours, and the possibility of hail up to 2 inches in diameter. The strongest storms could cause damage to tree branches and move outdoor objects, creating hazards for anyone outside during the storms.
The storm system is predicted to move east-northeast at speeds of up to 45 mph. Cities like Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, and Champaign will likely experience the most severe conditions, while areas further north such as Madison, Wisconsin, and parts of southern Wisconsin will see less intense activity.
The National Weather Service advises residents to stay informed with multiple sources of weather updates and exercise caution when driving through heavy rain or during periods of high wind.
