Denver, Colo. – Severe thunderstorms are poised to sweep across eastern Colorado this afternoon and evening, threatening 15 counties with damaging winds and large hail through 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Adams, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Elbert, El Paso, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Weld, and Yuma counties until 8 p.m. MDT. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail larger than quarters are possible, especially along I-70, I-76, and rural highways.

Residents in Denver, Greeley, and Sterling could face sudden downpours, toppled trees, and power outages. Emergency managers urge people to secure loose outdoor items, move vehicles under shelter, and stay away from windows during severe storms. Travelers should monitor conditions closely, as rapid changes in visibility and hazardous driving are likely on open roads.

This is the region’s most widespread severe weather threat so far in July, reminiscent of last summer’s intense thunderstorm outbreaks. Stay tuned for updates; additional warnings or advisories could be issued if storms intensify or shift.
